Scooping Your Poop For You, Not Just A Passing Phase
It's no secret that we live in an animal-friendly city. Boarding and grooming are a booming industry and so is the services of scooping your pet's unwanted matter. For a small fee over 16 companies with names like Rovers Leftovers and Scoop Le Poop will remove that unsightly and unsanitary pet waste for you.
That’s the sound of a couple of pounds of dog poop hitting the inside of a yellow shovel or scooper. It’s not glamorous but it’s a fact of life and something that is best not left lying around.
“Dogs eat protein so as terrible as it sounds it’s much closer to human waste and you wouldn’t leave that in your yard.”
Nathalie Lima is the owner of All About Doody, an amusingly named pet waste removal company which covers an area from the Woodlands all the way into Bellaire. As the unofficial designated dog waste remover in her three-dog-household, she takes her job and company very seriously.
“All the pathogens and bacteria, it has to be picked up and of course if you don’t it eventually seeps into our ground water.”
Which is why she hires people like Jo Vross a pooper scooper and trainer. Vross is in a postage stamp sized yard and is describing the process of trying to catch every last bit of dog waste since she visited the same yard last week.
“Now normally we walk what we call a grid, but as you can see, this yard is tiny so we just have to be really, really careful.”
Howlin: “It’s funny while you’re trying to find it, I’m trying to make sure I’m not stepping in any.”
She uses a small rake to scrape the poop into her scooper. Lifting low hanging branches to make sure she hasn’t missed any. This yard is home to a small Yorkshire terrier. But not every yard is the same.
Customer Anne Peebles with dog Penny
“I think a lot of people have the misguided notion that our clients all live in mansions and estates and that’s not exactly true.”
Clients like Anne Peebles, who as a stay at home mom, has her hands full with her nearly half an acre backyard.
“We’ve got two dogs and two toddlers and the toddlers love to be outside. And so for me it was really important that the area is clean. So we actually have them come and scoop twice a week.”
Prices for pooper scooper companies range from $9 to 19 per dog per week.
While the City of Houston doesn’t employ a pooper scooper service, they do issue citations for not cleaning up after your dog.
Data obtained by KUHF from Houston’s Bureau for Animal Control show last year nearly 180 complaints are from home owners with unwanted dog waste in their yards.
Perhaps next time those home owners might consider calling Poop 911 or K9 PooPolice instead.
